Denis Durantou, 1957 – 2020, was a ‘legend’ of Bordeaux winemaking. He studied politics and economics at Sciences Po, then winemaking at the University of Bordeaux. At 16 he spent one year working in a restaurant, and also worked summer jobs helping in vineyards in St-Emilion. During his wine studies, he shadowed Pierre Lasserre, the manager at L’Eglise Clinet, before taking over. His estates included Château L’Eglise Clinet and La Petite Eglise (Pomerol), Les Cruzelles and La Chenade (Lalande-de-Pomerol), Château Montlandrie (Castillon), Château Saintayme (St-Emilion, rented vines) and Denis Durantou was one of the few owners in Bordeaux who was also the viticulturalist and chief winemaker across his estates. His genius was particularly highlighted in his work Château Montlandrie (Castillon), showcasing his skills in wines that offered some of the best values in the whole of France. 94/100 Tim Atkin
